Frank Boulton reflects on the recent Trident Alternatives Review

Earlier this year, in an article in the Friend, Michael Bartlet stated that Trident, Britain’s nuclear deterrent, is obsolete, immoral and a ‘white elephant’. He encouraged Quakers to ask their MPs to ensure a full debate when a formal Trident Alternatives Review was published. Prepared under the auspices of the chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander (Liberal Democrat MP for Inverness), its 25,000 words (on fifty-eight pages) were finally published on 16 July and debated in the House of Commons the following evening.
