Some historians like to search for an event at the beginning of a century that serves as the signature of what the century meant for human history. Most might be inclined to choose the first world war as the event that most marked the historical march of the twentieth century. What might this century’s signature event be? Was it 9/11, which broadened into Bali, Madrid and London? Was it the global financial meltdown, which began in 2008 and has mired our economies in recessions, austerity and deep anxiety among those most affected? Will it be the rise of popular movements, mostly of young people, which will mark this fraught young century?
